Frequently asked questions.
What is Pilates?
Pilates is a total body conditioning method. “Contrology” as Joseph Pilates called his method, is a form of corrective exercises that strengthen, lengthen, and tone the entire body. The method focuses on the core muscles of the inner thighs, glutes, abdominals, and back. Focus is given to stability, spinal movement, and muscle flexibility. The movements are preformed in a flowing precise manner, to challenge and build the mind-body-spirit connection. With regular practice the body is transformed and so it quality of life.
Where do I begin?
I suggest you start with a few private sessions. I want you to be familiar with your body's strengths, needs and work correctly from the beginning. I introduce you to the philosophy of pilates, terminology, and the different apparatuses. There is a lot of information that you need to focus on in the beginning, to create a strong platform for your success in training. Some people stay with privates who like and need the one on one attention. Others move into duets with a partner of similar level, knowledge of safety, and Pilates terminology.
How many times a week should I do Pilates?
I recommend two to four times a week to learn the language and connection. Practice and consistently is key.
What if I have an injury?
You’ve come to the right place! Pilates is an excellent way to rehabilitate and recover from a chronic pain or a recurring injury. The Pilates method works the body as a whole, while focusing on balancing the weaknesses. Most injuries are from incorrect body alignment over time that become an injury or a chronic problem. Definitely start with privates, so your needs are directly addressed. I also require clearance from your doctor or PT if the injury is fresh, or just coming off PT.
What if I have joint replacements or spinal surgeries, can I still do Pilates?
Pilates can be safe and effective way of preparing you for your upcoming surgery, with permission of your doctor and in the hands of the right instructor. Yes, you can do Pilates if you have had a knee/hip/shoulder replacement, as long as you have been cleared by your doctor and completed PT. (As always, you should know your restrictions for your own body.)
What should I wear?
Clothing that’s comfortable and not too loose. Socks are required, you do NOT need shoes. We suggest that if you wear loose shorts, you wear bike shorts underneath.
